The Australian Faunal Directory (AFD) is a taxonomic checklist of the fauna of Australia provided online by the Australian Biological Resources Study. Currently around 60,000 valid species and subspecies names exist in the AFD. The entries are written by experts in the area and provide the taxonomic nomenclature including synonymy, literature citation, location and status of type material and type locality for each available name, a brief summary of geographical distribution and ecological attributes, host data if available, and important references on various aspects, especially biology. The DiGIR implementation of AFD contains only those Darwin Core 2.0 compatible fields. The rest of the data can be obtained from the Australian Faunal Directory.

The land mollusc data comprises details of approximately 86% of the data available on land snails in Australia and totals 100,000 records. Records from within close proximity (within a few metres), within the same month and by the same institution have been merged into a single observation point in this data. The data currently available on GBIF includes the Australian part of the Pulmonata database available from the Chicago Field Museum of Natural History together with Pulmonata databases from the Australian Museum, Queensland Museum, Museum Victoria, Queen Victoria Museum, South Australian Museum, Museums and Art Galleries of the Northern Territory and the Western Australian Museum. The other entries are taken from labels on museum specimens. Spatial reliability varies. Recent records are derived from GPS and map coordinates, but the bulk of the records have been taken from labels or estimated from on-line gazetteers. The taxonomy is as provided by the host institutions, but obvious synonyms have been allocated to a valid species name. Possible new species assigned 'cf' have been referred to the species regarded as most similar, but morpho-species identified by workers as being clearly distinct (ie given a numeric identifier or similar) have been treated as separate taxa.

New Caledonia is a large island in the SW Pacific that has been relatively isolated since separation from other southern land masses more than 50 million years ago. It has a rich fauna of endemic native dung beetles (Scarabaeinae), all belonging to the Tribe Canthonini which is distributed on the southern land masses. Their taxonomy was reviewed in 1991, at which time 8 genera and 26 species were recognised. This was based on less than 200 specimens scattered in museums around the world. Since the year 2000, the fauna has been surveyed intensively over 8 visits by the Queensland Museum, Brisbane, with cooperation of the Department of Natural Resources, Province Sud, Nouméa. Special effort was made to sample previously uncollected areas, with most localities GPS truthed. This yielded more than 10,000 specimens of which 4435 representative specimens have been mounted, labelled, identifed, registered and databased to form the core of the dataset presented here. A few records (12) have been added from reliable published sources where they provide species points not represented in the new survey collection. Sorting the large new collection has enabled a provisional revision of the taxonomy: 3 species are synonymised under existing names and 2 new genera and 19 new species are described, bringing the known native dung beetle fauna of the island to 10 genera and 44 species. This revised taxonomy is used in the dataset with undescribed species being given a numeric identifier.
