<abstract>This data set includes the results of the activities undertaken in the REVIZEE Program by the South Score/Benthos (Cabo de São Tomé, RJ – Arroio Chuí, RS). The main objectives of this sub-program are the knowledge of biodiversity and the evaluation of the sustainable potential of the faunistic resources of the exclusive economic zone of the southeastern and southern regions of Brazil. The field collections were taken from December 13th 1997 to April 20th 1998 in the continental shelf and slope (60 – 810 m depth) with the Oceanographic Vessel Prof. W. Besnard (IO-USP). The fauna was collected using the benthic samplers van Veen and Box-corer and the rectangular dredge, summing up 322 samples. In some cases, data of organisms scrapped from hard substrates were also presented. The following groups are presented: Porifera, Cnidaria (Hydrozoa, Scyphozoaand and Anthozoa), Sipuncula, Mollusca (Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Cephalopoda, Polyplacophora and Solenogastres), Annelida (Polychaeta), Crustacea (Ostracoda, Cirripedia, Decapoda, Stomatopoda and Tanaidacea), Bryozoa, Brachiopoda, Echinodermata (Ophiuroidea, Asteroidea, Crinoidea, Holothuroidea and Echinoidea) and Chordata (Ascidiacea). A total of 131.369 individuals were recorded and classified into 28 higher taxa. The most abundant and frequent groups were Porifera, Cnidaria, Sipuncula, Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Scaphopoda, Polychaeta, Crustacea, Ophiuroidea, Bryozoa and Brachiopoda. Bryozoa was the most abundant group (30.501 records) followed by Polychaeta (22.412 inds), Ophiuroidea (16.918), Crustacea (14.240), Brachiopoda (12.834) and Bivalvia (11.761). The collected data reveal a very rich fauna. The structure of the benthic fauna in the study area was characterized by the association between higher abundances of organisms with sandy and muddy substrata, both with low contents of calcium carbonate (100 – 200 m). The bathymetric distribution of the higher taxa was also demonstrated to be associated with the substrate type. The higher taxa recorded in this study are being analyzed by experts to enable a more precise evaluation of the biodiversity. A total of 1012 taxa were identified up to date and a significant number of new occurrences and new species were reported. The identified material was placed in biological collections of museums or institutions with curatorial tradition.</abstract>

<abstract>This data set contains records of pelagic and demersal fish collected during the REVIZEE program off the southern Brazilian coast. Six oceanographic cruises were carried out from 1996 to 1999 between Cape of São Tomé (22oS) and Chuí (34oS). Pelagic fish distribution was investigated with acoustic methods (SIMRAD EK-500, double frequency ecosound, of 38 and 120 kHz) and fish was collected with a mid-water trawl at stations with high target strength, mainly within 100 and 500-m depth. Demersal fish were investigated to assess the fishing potential of catches vulnerable to hooks over both hard and soft bottoms on the outer shelf and upper slope – 80% of captures consisted of commercially valuable species.</abstract>

<abstract>This data set contains the records of demersal fish fauna inhabiting irregular bottoms and depressions on the outer shelf and slope of the South and Southeastern Brazilian coast between 220 15’S and 340 40’S collected during the REVIZEE program. Twenty one oceanographic cruises were carried out from May1996 to April 2002. Along the region, in five bottom types classified according the topography and hardness of their substrate, conic and rectangular traps and “pargueiras” (a small longline) captured some 293,200 fishes, including some 70 hagfishes.</abstract>

<abstract>The main objectives of the REVIZEE Program were the species inventory and the evaluation of the sustainable yield of living resources from the Brazilian Exclusive Economic Zone. In this context, the benthos has an important role, since it is one of the main components of marine food webs, being food to many pelagic and demersal fishing resources or as a living resource itself. This work presents a characterization of the phyto- and zoobenthos from the continental shelf and slope of the central Brazilian coast, between Salvador, in Bahia (13°00’S- 38°31’W) to São Tomé Cape, in Rio de Janeiro State (22°12’S - 41°15 W). Samples were taken in 222 stations, during 4 oceanographic cruises (1996-2002). Sampling was made basically using rectangular dredges, Van Veen grab and a box-corer. The region presents a rich benthic fauna and flora, especially at areas such as Abrolhos reefs, Vitória-Trindade and Almirante Salda nha seamounts and near Salvador (BA) and São Tomé Cape (RJ). Macroalgae occurred mainly at continental shelf and upper slope, with green algae as the most rich and abundant group, despite the biomass contribution of brown algae in some places. Thirty-one macrobenthic groups were found, with one third occurring in more than 70% of stations. Most organisms belong to epifauna (animals living on the substrate), in part due to the kind of equipment used (basically dredges) and also to the main bottom type found in the region (mainly biogenic substrata, with algae nodules and calcareous sediment). This substrate favours the presence of epifauna, composed mainly by sessile animals such as sponges and corals, the most abundant organisms in terms of biomass (ca. 85%). Infauna (animals that live buried in the sediment) was represented by various taxa of polychaets, sipuculans, echinoderms, small crustaceans and mollusks, the two latter being numerically dominant. The macrofauna composition and abundance were r elated to botto m characteristics and local depth, with organisms being dominant in shallow waters (up to 100m depth) with biogenic substrate such as red algae nodules. Environmental heterogeneity given by differences in shelf and slope substrata, the presence of a biogenic bottom, estuaries, coral reefs, seamounts and canyons provides a great variety of microhabitats and it seems to be responsible for high benthic diversity found. Despite the lack of a precise evaluation of the economic potential of benthic living resources, the REVIZEE program provided an excellent species inventory, identifying species with economic value, new species occurrences to Brazilian coast and new species to Science, specially from the outer shelf and continental slope.</abstract>

<abstract>This volume of the REVIZEE Document Series summarizes information on the identification and occurrence of the innumerable larval fish collected during the Program "Assessment of the Sustainable Living Resource Potential of the Exclusive Economic Zone" (REVIZEE). The study material was collected during three oceanographic cruises carried out between 1998 and 2000, in the area from the Real River (BA) to the São Tomé Cape (RJ), including submarine banks and the oceanic islands Martin Vaz and Trindade. The REVIZEE Program made possible great improvements in the knowledge of the larval fish species that constitute the ichthyoplankton community present in the area delimited by the Central SCORE. This program significantly advanced the study of larval fishes along the Brazilian coast, especially the central coast where information about larval oceanic fishes was sparse. Accurate identification of the larval fishes in a specific area is fundamentally important for assessment of fisheries resources. The great majority of marine teleost fishes have a larval stage, spending part of their life cycles in the plankton. The exploitation potential of these resources depends directly on events during this phase of their life cycle. There are many identification guides for the early life stages of fish species occurring in the North Atlantic and Indo-Pacific. However, until now there was no identification guide for larval fishes from Brazil. The present volume is a contribution to the understanding of the larval fishes occurring along the Brazilian coast, mainly those which have a mesopelagic habit. The guide provides information about 13 orders, 95 families and 156 species of larval fishes, of which nine species were recorded for the first time off Brazil. The geographical distributions of several species were extended. The chapters are arranged according to orders, and for each species provide basic information on identification, ecology and distribution along the central coast and worldwide, and the references that were used for species identification and to obtain distribution data. A complete species list includes taxa that were identified to the taxonomic level of order and family and are not represented in the plates. In addition, there is information on ichthyoplankton studies, study area, sampling and identification methodologies. A table lists the occurrence of each taxon during the three oceanographic cruises, and a glossary defines the main terms used in larval fish identification. This atlas contributes to knowledge of larval fishes from the Brazilian coast, and makes this information available to ichthyoplanktologists and to all those interested in plankton studies. We hope that this book will be only the first of many subsequent guides to larval fishes from the Brazilian coast, and that it will advance the study of these organisms in Brazil.</abstract>

<abstract>This volume of the REVIZEE Documents Series presents, in atlas form, the principal groups of the zooplankton community recorded during the Program to Evaluate the Sustainable Potential of Living Resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone (REVIZEE) - SCORE Central. The specimens were collected during the Central III, Central IV and Bahia 1 campaigns, in the period from 1998 through 2000. The collections were made between the Real River in Bahia (12oS) and Cape São Tomé in Rio de Janeiro (22oS), including the seamounts of the Vitória-Trindade and Martin Vaz chain. The strategy for the plankton study, established by the National Project Proposal, had as its objective to characterize the pelagic environment, in order to evaluate the fishery potential of the continental shelf and slope of the Brazilian EEZ. This atlas is a product of this Program, and focuses on the diagnosis of the taxa identified in these samples. Atlases to aid in the identification of zooplanktonic organisms have been developed for several oceans. The two atlases previously produced for the Southwest Atlantic constitute fundamental contributions to knowledge of the marine zooplankton. However, in Brazil no atlas has yet been composed for the identification of these organisms. Six zoological groups were studied: Subclass Copepoda (70 species), Order Decapoda (30 taxa), Phylum Chaetognatha (17 species), Class Appendicularia (15 species), Order Salpida (8 species) and Order Doliolida (4 species). Several of these taxa are cited for the first time for the Brazilian coast, and the distributions of others have been extended to the southeast coast. This atlas contains general information about the zooplankton, the study area, and the collection methods. The results are presented in the form of an identification plate for each species, containing the diagnosis, ecology, and distribution, the material studied, and the literature sources used for its identification. In this context, this atlas aims to contribute to the identification of the zooplankton of Brazilian coastal waters and to knowledge of the marine pelagic biodiversity. It is intended to continue the present work, completing it with other zoological groups not treated in this study.</abstract>
