For nearly two centuries, Academy scientific staff have collected biological specimens from all points on the globe. Our collection strengths are in North and South America, particularly the neo-tropics. The Academy maintains vast biological collections containing more than 17 million specimens, including an estimated 3% of the world's type specimens. A rapidly growing portion of data from these collections is available for online searches.
The primary objective of this project is to provide a database of the estimated 25,000 named species of mollusks in the Indo-Pacific region, with summary data on their distribution and ecology. Another objective is to combine Indo-Pacific data with existing databases for Western Atlantic and Europe marine mollusk species and for higher taxa of mollusks to form the basis of a global database of Mollusca. This database will provide a uniform framework for linking specimen records from museum collections and data from fisheries to show spatial and temporal patterns of occurrence and abundance. This datasource provides primary access to the Indo-Pacific Mollusc Dataset using the obis schema. Data in the Indo-Paciffic Mollusc database use names from the Indo-Pacific Mollusc project together with point records from the Academy of Natural Sciences and the Australian Museum. Specimens referenced in this data set may be in the collections of either the Australian Museum or the Academy of Natural Sciences, but may have current identifications in those collections that are junior synonymys (or other junior names) of names in current use in the Indo-Pacific Mollusc database.

The invertebrate paleontology collections at ANSP are the oldest in the United States and hold material collected and described by the earliest workers in American and British paleontology. The collection contains more than 5,000 lots of type material of more than 100 authors including Timothy A. Conrad, William M. Gabb, Henry C. Lea and Isaac Lea, Samuel G. Morton, Axel A. Olsson, Anne Harbison and Henry A. Pilsbry. Strengths of the collection are in Cenozoic and Cretaceous Mollusca of the New World, particularly the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains; Quaternary Mollusca worldwide; and the Mesozoic of England. About 75% of the collection is molluscan fossils; total holdings are approximately 106,000 lots containing about 1,000,000 specimens.

The collection of recent mollusks at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (ANSP) is the oldest in the country, and the second largest catalogued one in the world. It currently has more than 430,000 catalogued lots containing about 12 million specimens, including 30,000-35,000 lots preserved in ethanol. Type specimens of more than 400 authors are represented in more than 12,000 type lots. ANSP has specimens from all over the world. Greatest strengths are in shallow-water marine mollusks from the tropical Indo-Pacific and the Western Atlantic and worldwide freshwater and land mollusks. History The history of the malacological collection at ANSP is closely tied to the history of the Academy itself. Founded in 1812, it is the oldest continually operating natural history museum in the United States. Among the founders of the Academy, perhaps the best known is Thomas Say (1787-1834), renowned for his investigations on mollusks, Recent and fossil insects, and other invertebrates. Constantine S. Rafinesque (1783-1840), a naturalist who coined the term "malacologie," was intermittently associated with the Academy, as was Charles A. Lesueur (1778-1846), the first student of American cephalopods. Other prominent nineteenth century Academy malacologists include Timothy A. Conrad (1803-1877), mainly a paleontologist; Isaac Lea (1792-1886), an authority on freshwater mussels, Samuel S. Haldemann (1812-1880), who studied freshwater gastropods, and George W. Tryon, Jr. (1838-1888), who founded and edited the American Journal of Conchology (1865-1872) and started the Manual of Conchology in 1878, publishing the first twelve volumes. Henry A. Pilsbry (1862-1957) inherited the Manual of Conchology from Tryon, and while greatly improving its scientific quality, continued the systematic survey of Recent gastropod species through the forty-fifth and final volume, published in 1935. In 1889 (at age 26), Pilsbry began the journal The Nautilus, of which he was an editor until his death. Late in life, he completed a classic monographic study, Land Mollusca of North America (1939-1948). He also published major systematic works on barnacles. Pilsbry authored more than 1,000 articles and books and named more than 5,600 taxa. H. B. Baker (1889-1971), Professor of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania, was associated with the Academy as Research Associate or Fellow from 1925 until his death. He was an outstanding anatomist who studied land and freshwater gastropods. Toward the end of his career, he completed a curatorial revision of the Academy's land and freshwater mollusks, and published lists of the non-marine gastropod types in which he designated numerous lectotypes (Baker 1962-1964). R. Tucker Abbott (1919-), who came to the Academy in 1954, greatly improved the housing and curatorial condition of the collection. He also substantially enlarged the collection, primarily by stimulating amateurs to sponsor and participate in expeditions to the tropical Indo-Pacific. Abbott founded the monographic journal Indo-Pacific Mollusca, one volume of which was completed before he resigned to take a position at the Delaware Museum of Natural History in 1969. Robert Robertson was chairman from 1969 until 1972, George M. Davis was chairman from 1972to 2000, followed by Gary Rosenberg. Georeferencing of the malacology collection database was accomplished by Dan Graf in 2004.
